Banned Book Week is an annual event at the end of September that celebrates our precious freedom to read! A brief history of Banned Books Week: Banned Books Week was launched in 1982 in response to a sudden surge in the number of challenges to books in schools, bookstores and libraries. More than 11,300 books have been challenged since 1982 according to the American Library Association. There were 311 challenges reported to the Office of Intellectual Freedom in 2014, and many more go unreported. In the Stonewall library, we value free and open access to information. We are proud to support readers of banned books! We have many titles from the Top 100 Banned Books List of 200o-2009. Come check one out today & get your mugshot taken!

Your Library This holiday weekend was the National Book Festival in Washington, D.C. Our librarian Ms. Neal was lucky enough to attend the festival and brought back something special! You may know Sonia Manzano for her role as Maria on Sesame Street. What you may not know about Sonia is that she is a first-generation-on-the-mainland Puerto Rican who grew up in the South Bronx. She used her personal experiences to write The Revolution of Evelyn Serrano, a gripping work of fiction set in an unforgettable time in America when young Latinos took control of their destinies. At the National Book Festival this weekend, Ms. Neal acquired a copy of this wonderful novel and Ms. Manzano dedicated the book to the SJHS Raiders. Check out this book in the library! Learn more about the novel and author at: http://therevolutionofevelynserrano.com/about.html Read on, Raiders!
